Sounds Impossible: A Call to Worship for the Twentieth Sunday After Pentecost, B

Sounds Impossible: A Call to Worship for the Twentieth Sunday After Pentecost, B

Focal Text: Mark 10:17-31

This call to worship was read at the beginning of a service which included a sermon on the command of Jesus to a wealthy man to sell all his possessions and give the proceeds to the poor. The sermon illuminated the difficulty of that task and set it in balance with the ample grace present in the text. The path of discipleship is evidently one of balancing a high and difficult calling with the Grace of God, it’s about balance.

One:    The call of God for us is heavy. It is no less than to save the world.

Many: That sounds impossible! Are we really supposed to fulfill these expectations?

One:    Yes, we are.

Many: But we don’t know that we can.

One:    Oh, you can’t.

Many: So then we shouldn’t be trying to fulfill them?

One:    No, you should.

Many: Well, what in Heaven’s name should we do?

One:    Exactly!
